hello, gorgeous.

i'll tell you this much: it is a woman of character who puts up a christmas tree all by herself.

she begins by getting the thing out of the insane amounts of plastic wrapping, then wrangles its trunk into the tree stand, then assesses whether it is standing straight while somehow keeping it from either tipping over or eating her hair, then screws in the metal thingies. pauses after momentous completion of aforementioned tasks to appreciate her weirdly long and useful arms. next she finds the fairy lights, smiles at the martha-like forethought she had to so neatly wind them last year, then puts them on tree with much walking in circles and reaching - again with gangly appendages. then, wondertreewoman wrassles up every small tchotchke in the house, ties each with ribbon to create ornaments and begins festooning. now, she neatly avoids thoughts of how sad it might seem to herself or to others that she is putting up said tree alone on a sunday evening at the ripe old age of 31. a few minutes later, she realizes she is perhaps a genius, actually, as there is no one there to argue about the potentially tacky but probably perfect strips of material she cuts up, ties into garlands and drizzles from ol' tannenbaum's boughs. finally, she vacuums then sits down to drink in results while eating almond butter on a spoon. (yes, she double dips.)

garbage warrior

just saw THIS film, and it was great!
the main guy, Michael Reynolds,
is a totally fabulous character:
a bighearted, hilarious, smart,
raised-southern-baptist
hippie architect!
i highly recommend.

serendipity

when i moved back up to ak at the end of last summer,
i didn't know where i was going to live, or with whom.
i could not have imagined a better living situation than
o place with natalie!
what a sweet, sweet year that was.
i am SO grateful to know natalie,
so grateful to call her friend,
so grateful to have shared such amazing adventures with her:
themed potlucks and culinary delights, spontaneous dancing,
art days, open mic and other musical magic,
hikes, road trips, calendar syncing, first friday art walks,
kenai lake cabin trips, lunches with camper, more culinary delights...
natalie girl, my dear, you are so very fabulous!
and i am so very glad that you were born :o).
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

all in a day

one of my favorite aspects of working with kids
is getting to read picture books!
i'm always on the lookout for books that are
* a good story: interesting, inspiring, of good character, edifying
* nice to read aloud
* artistically engaging
at the library on saturday, i found all in a day,
written
by cynthia rylant and illustrated by nikki mcglure.
so here's a little monday morning storytime with ms. amy -- enjoy!

A day is a perfect piece of time
to live a life,
to plant a seed,
to watch the sun go by.
A day starts early,
work to do,
beneath a brand-new sky.
A day brings hope
and kindness, too...
a day is all its own.
You can make a wish,
and start again,
you can find your way back home.
Every bird and every tree
and every living thing
loves the promise in a day,
loves what it can bring.
There is faith in morningtime,
there is belief in noon.
Evening will come whispering
and shine a bright round moon.
A day can change just everything,
given half a chance.
Rain could show up at your door
and teach you how to dance.
The past is sailing off to sea,
the future's fast asleep.
A day is all you have to be,
all you get to keep.
Underneath the great big sky
the earth is all a-spin.
This day won't soon be over
and it won't come back again.
So live it well, make it count,
fill it up with you.
The day's all yours, it's waiting now...
see what you can do.

not-so-naked ladies

we hosted a "naked lady" party!
the deal is, you invite all your cool girlfriends over,
and ask them to bring their lovely clothes
that they don't wear any more
but don't really want to give to goodwill.
everybody brings their stuff and trades,
knowing that things will be loved and appreciated
by gals you love and appreciate.
such a great idea!
(and so funny to talk about around guys.)
